Wheel Well

We at Wheel Well have gained expert knowledge in child road safety through hands-on experience.

Our focus is on impact, not profit. We offer a variety of services, including car seat cleaning and car seat clinic for parents, to provide them with unbiased advice. Our projects for child pedestrians have multiple benefits, including education, literacy, and leadership skills. We advocate for changes in legislation and post-crash care to improve child road safety.

Our Road Map:

  • Conduct research to identify the main causes of child deaths on South African.
  • Develop a comprehensive strategy to address the identified causes, including education campaigns, infrastructure improvements, and enforcement of traffic laws.
  • Partner with local organizations and government agencies to implement the strategy and increase its impact.
  • Regularly measure the success of the strategy and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Continuously raise awareness and advocate for child road safety through media and community outreach.
  • Aim to decrease the number of child deaths on South African roads year on year with a long-term goal of reducing the death toll to zero.

Every child that dies is one child too many, and we will not rest until we have done everything in our power to reduce the death toll of children on South African roads.

Our mission is to empower children, families, and communities with the education and resources they need to ensure safe travel on the roads. Through partnerships and advocacy, we strive to reduce child injuries and fatalities caused by road traffic crashes.

At Wheel Well, we are committed to making a real difference in the lives of children on the road. To achieve this, we’ll be doing everything we can to maximize our reach and impact. We’ll be running projects and campaigns that are specifically focused on children, and we’ll be working closely with sponsors and partners to make sure that everything we do is as effective as possible.

We take our responsibility very seriously, and will always be completely transparent and honest in everything we do. We will be doing everything with integrity and dedication, to make sure that we can make the biggest impact possible on child road safety.

What keeps Wheel Well going?
Like all modern vehicles, Wheel Well is streamlined and fuel-efficient. We make funding go far with our economical driving style. Currently, our tanks hold enough fuel to last us three months ahead. It is much like travelling at night. You can only see the road ahead as far as the headlights allow, but you have complete faith that the rest of the road is there. Additional funding will help us see the road further ahead and appreciate and affect the changing scenario that is road safety for children in South Africa.

Our Milestones

On an epic journey such as this one, there are many memorable moments. Every bit of funding that comes in, all the car seats donated, the very special children and their families that the Car Seats for Kids campaign has touched and all those precious moments that we experience are all very special milestones on our journey. Milestones that stand out are:

  • A 55% decrease in child road fatalities since 2012.
  • Over 11 500 children (and counting) in safe and clean car seats through the Car Seats for Kids Campaign.
  • Gumtree Women in Autos Award for Extraordinary Contribution to the Automotive Industry – August 2018
  • The first handout of Halo Beanies in our Glow Kids Glow child pedestrian project in April 2018
  • Proud winner of the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award 2016 – Safer Road User category
  • Amendment 22 to the National Road Traffic Act that makes car seats compulsory for children under 3.1
  • The Founder Peggie Mars recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International.

The Road Ahead

  • Amendment to Regulation 231 of the NRTA: Every child is a person for loading vehicles.
  • Increase the mandatory age for car seats use to 12 years in Regulation 213 of the NRTA.
  • Speed limit of 30km/h around all schools.
  • Improvements to post crash care of children.
  • Compliance to international standards in how the data is collected for road death statistics.

It is of vital importance that Wheel Well continue to serve our children in road safety. Our work and repository of expertise belong to the people of South Africa in the interest of our children and future drivers. Funding received will be used to further education and awareness on the vulnerability of children in traffic as well as secure our future, succession, and sustainability by applying sound financial, marketing and business practices.
