Kids on the Go
Ensuring Safe Transport for Children
Our Vision:
Our vision is to ensure that all children traveling in public and school transport have access to safe and secure journeys, free from the risk of injury and death.
Our Mission
To raise awareness of the dangers faced by children in public and school transport and to promote the use of child restraints and proper seat belt usage.
Through education, advocacy and partnerships with stakeholders, we strive to bring about changes to the primary legislation, the National Road Traffic Act, 1996, and empower families to keep their children safe while traveling. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the number of child passenger road deaths in South Africa and to create a safer future for all children.

The tragedy of child passenger road deaths continues to rise, with 878 children under the age of 14 losing their lives in car crashes in 2021 alone. Despite this alarming statistic, the current National Road Traffic Act, 1996 and the National Road Traffic Regulations, 1999 do not adequately address the safety concerns of children in public and school transport. Our campaign aims to address the shortcomings in current legislation and ensure the safety of all children while they are being transported. The concept behind our solution is the Secure-a-Kid harness, an innovative device designed to properly reposition seat belts and spread the impact of a crash, thus preventing seat belt injuries. These harnesses are easy to use, can be carried in a school bag, and can be used in any vehicle equipped with a 3-point seat belt.
Our objectives include:
- Raising awareness about the benefits of child restraints and safe seat belt use.
- Providing lower-income families with the means to keep their children safe.
- Educating parents and children on the correct use of seat belts.
- Motivating changes to the primary legislation, the National Road Traffic Act, 1996, Regulation 231 of the National Road Traffic act, 1999.
We propose the following changes to current legislation:
- All school-going children should be considered one person for the purpose of vehicle loading in school transport.
- An approved child restraint must be used for children under 1.5m tall in all school transport.
We propose the following changes to current legislation:
- Administration of the campaign and selection of beneficiaries.
- Hand-out events at schools with talks on safe seat belt use.
- Engagement with stakeholders in the industry to promote the campaign and achieve its objectives.
- Social media exposure through our website, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
- Compilation of reports on the allocation of funds and the outcomes achieved.
Together, we can make a difference and ensure the safety of our children on the go.
